What is Yin?

Yin is a very simple practice combining both yoga and meditation to open the body and still the mind.


Unlike more common styles of yoga, Yin is deeply rooted in Chinese Philosophy, Taoism and TCM (Tradition Chinese Medicine): placing emphasis on the need for a greater balance in our life: Yin & Yang.

Far too often in Western Civilisations, this balance is not achievable as technology means we are connected 24/7. Our increasingly demanding lives, leaves us with very few pockets of stillness to maintain this balance. Leaving us with tired, irritable and stressed. Over time, this will deliver physical & mental burnout. When we are spending our energy we are in our Yang state.

In order to achieve our full potential in work and life, we must renew our energy the same as we spend. This is Yin. The highest form of Yin in sleep, which gives us the most amount of renewal. However in order to achieve our fullest we must make sure we are keeping pockets of stillness, of Yin, during our days outside fo sleep.

Yin yoga is a practice of mental and physical stillness: Postures are held for a much longer duration than in a dynamic, Yang, practice (like Ashtanga), which during this time body weight is applied to push through the connective tissue and create space for growth and flexibility. Much like in acupuncture, a Yin sequence is focused at unblocking the energy channels of the body, The Meridians. When the Meridians are unblocked, we can release the ‘Qi’ the energy which gives us vitality.

Typical Yin practices will involve several postures held for between 3 -15 minutes. The long hold provides an opportunity for the student to find stillness and sit in listening mode with the mind and the thoughts. Yin is a gateway to meditation, offering all the benefits of Meditation, using the body to access the inner state of calm. 

Yin is a deeply healing and transformative yoga practice, and generally leaves you feeling lighter and calmer in your body and mind, and great to compliment any physical Yang practice (Vinyasa Yoga, running, Cycling etc) - also to offer an alternate philosophy to living in a fast moving world.
